Capacity building for tackling Marine Litter in MPAs - focus on Montenegro

Published on

On June 29th, 2021 from 9.30 to 12.00 (CET), the Interreg MED co-funded Mediterranean Biodiversity Protection Community (MBPC) project and its Working Group 1 on Biodiversity protection and transboundary challenges, organised an online training workshop on Marine Litter monitoring and mitigation and prevention measures in Marine protected areas (MPAs), especially addressing the need of selected stakeholders in Montenegro.

The capacity building webinar introduced the results of recent monitoring of marine litter in Montenegro particularly linked to the fishing sector, the latest findings by the GEF Adriatic Project related to marine litter, and the MBPC work on the topic. An overview of PlasticBustersMPAs' protocols and impacts on biota, focusing on innovations, advancements and research areas was provided, illustrated by concrete local experiences in Spanish and Croatian MPAs to showcase how to start building a management plan for marine litter. This online workshop is planned to be followed by a hands-on training action in autumn 2021 in the region.

The webinar aimed to transfer the Mediterranean Biodiversity Protection Community's knowledge and tools to better protect and manage biodiversity, in this case through the organization of training opportunities for present and future MPA managers and other interested actors.

This online workshop is the second after the Climate Change mitigation webinar organized in November 2020 in collaboration with MPA-Adapt / MPA-Engage, and will be complemented by a third capacity building webinar on protected areas and governance for marine protected areas recently designated or to do so in Montenegro. The webinar report will soon be available through our website.
