The Med Biodiversity Protection community took part in a preparatory meeting for the COP21, gathering Mediterranean regional stakeholders in Athens, organised by the UNEP/MAP-Barcelona Convention Secretariat, 24-25 October 2019.
This was the first stakeholder’s consultation of this kind ahead of the Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention (COP21). Key messages formulated by participants will be considered in the drafting of the Naples Ministerial Declaration and in the preparation of the new UNEP/MAP Medium-Term Strategy 2022-2027.
The 21st Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean (Barcelona Convention) and its Protocols will take place on 2-5 December 2019 in Naples.
A side event will be organised by the Med Biodiversity Protection Community, Tuesday, 3 December 2019, from 13:00 to 15:00, in Sala Sirena, Castello dell’Ovo, Naples, Italy. The common focus of the event will be on MPAs and their management systems as key tools to face the environmental challenges in the Mediterranean such as climate change and anthropogenic pressures on natural resources.
